Winter Sosltice 2024

The Zeus & Hera collection of the Unearthly Beings line has been such an incredible challenge, and so rewarding to work on. As the weather gets colder, and I bundle up in more and more layers, I always look forward to the winter solstice, and the return of lighter days. I struggled at first, to choose a god and goddess to represent the Winter. I felt that other seasons had such relevant stories and myths that related to them, but I felt less familiar with ones centered around winter. I kept coming back to Zeus and Hera and their wintery, icey moods, particularly to each other. Their strength and determination reminded me of the winter wind and ice beneath my feet. I thought about the different tales of Zeus’s anger while braving the cold walking to my classes. Winter is a season that refuses to be ignored, and is absolutely relentless- and I don’t feel there was a better pair than Zeus and Hera to represent that. When finding crystals that represented each, I wanted to draw a connection between lightning and ice, finding pale tones and sharp edges for Zeus. Hera, on the other hand, I focused on tones of peacock feathers, thinking of the status they represent and the dramatism they invoke. I loved how they would juxtapose each other, feeling like the warm indoors and the fierce weather outside all at once.

My hope for this collection is that each person who wears it, carries the warmth of the solstice with them, in harmony with the chilling wind this season. That we may all find comfort in the cold, as well as refuge from it. I hope that you all find resilience and transformation in the stories of Zeus and Hera this season, like I did.

Persephone & Hades

Autumn Equinox 2024

The Persephone & Hades collection of the Unearthly Beings line has been so wonderful to explore as the fall equinox makes its way to us. When learning about the fall equinox, and watching the seasons change when I make my commute to school, I find myself reminded frequently of Persephone and Hades, and their story. I think about the transition Persephone makes to the underworld each year, and how the transition from summer to fall makes me feel so much more connected to that idea. Watching Demeter mourn the loss of her child, while Hades celebrates the return of his wife, evokes the same feelings to me that fall does. There is this dance between the trees of both turning these beautiful colors, and losing their leaves too. When finding crystal beads that were connected to Hades and Persephone, I found myself looking at these deeply rich, autumn colors. These deep garnets (love, self confidence, grounding), lava rock (creativity, strength, stability), and even green jade (abundance, gentleness, harmony). I couldn’t help but crave the pomegranates that this god and goddess were so fond of, and the color of the fruit itself, too.

Celebrating all the growth that has been made this season, while still preparing for the cold winter ahead.

My hope for this collection, in whatever way it has found you, is that regardless of your beliefs, or what your favorite story or myth might be this autumn- that you find comfort in the crystals that will accompany you in my jewelry. That the properties of these necklaces help guide you through the equinox, and the rest of the year, and help with the manifestation of a good harvest (emotionally or physically) and find the passion, strength, and love that I found in the story of Persephone and Hades.
