The Lovers - 6

Follow your heart

After leaving the Hierophant, the Fool greets the Lovers.  They face us, naked and open with the sun, the angel Raphael, and a mountain between them.  The Lovers are represented by Adam and Eve, with the Tree of Life behind the man, and the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil and the snake behind the woman.  They show us the duality of life and the coming decision to follow what we love most.  The Hierophant taught us the guidelines and traditions of our community, now their pure love and intentions ask us to follow our hearts and seek out what we truly want.

Meanings

  • The Lovers show us the choice between following your head or heart, the duality between the Tree of Life and Tree of Knowledge (heart and head).

  • This card shows growth from the Hierophant who taught us the guidelines and traditions, it is now up to you to use that information but ultimately decide which path to follow and what is most important to you.

  • There are big decisions ahead of you, they could be romantic but not necessarily.  Determine what is important to you and follow that path.

  • Warning to check in with yourself and see if your heart and your values are aligned.  There are decisions to be made and you need to get to the root of the problem.

Numerology - 6

The number six represents unconditional and romantic love.  It is protective and self-sacrificing, especially towards loved ones.  Six is connected to Venus, the planet of love, it can represent nurturing and caregiving, and compassion for others.  When unbalanced, sixes can be too dependent on others and tend to over give.

Symbolism

Sun – the sun here is a source of light and inspiration.  It shows that everything is out in the open and the yellow color represents the air signs.

Angel – an image of the angel, Raphael, who is a sign of the element air, represents the healing and protection that is blessing the pair of humans

Humans – the humans are soulmates and represent Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, they show pure love, innocence, youth, and the duality found in life.  Their nakedness shows their openness and lack of things to hide.

Two Trees – Behind Adam is the Tree of Life with 12 fruits on it (the zodiac signs, tribes of Israel, and completeness), and behind Eve is the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil with four fruits on it (earthly and connected to the elements) and also has the snake climbing up it.  The trees echo the duality of the humans and show the choice between following head or heart.

Snake – the snake represents temptation towards earthly pleasure and the things that pull us away from the divine path.  This is a foreshadowing to the Devil card, which shows these two leaning into their temptation.

Mountain – the phallic shaped mountain separating them shows the heightened arousal and anticipation as well as the challenges that can arise in love and life.
